West of the interstate I-25 sits an area well known for its red rocks - the Garden of the Gods and of course, the majestic Rocky mountains as well as some very distinct neighborhoods.
Pikes Peak inspired Katherine Lee Bates to write "America the Beautiful," and also provides us with a 360-degree panoramic view. The summit of Pikes Peak is at an altitude of over 14,000 feet. Pikes Peak Highway and Pikes Peak Cog Railway are favorites with our visitors. In the summer the mountain is crawling with people making the trek up Barr Trail and further. If you drive up to the Peak, you will have to stop half way down to have your brakes checked before proceeding to the bottom. If you enjoy a challenge and are fit then you will feel the need to compete in the Pikes Peak Marathon - runners run, and oft times end up walking the 23 miles to the mountain's summit and back down again. Be aware tho - as it says on my home page, "This is Colorado, if you don't like the weather, stick around for an hour" and this holds true at the summit - runners will start off on a beautiful hot morning only to encounter snow or rain or a hail storm just above the tree line by mid day. If you go up by car, you will have to stop half way down to have your brakes tested for over-heating. Please take coats with you regardless of the time of year or time of day. Fishing at Crystal Reservoir and panning for gems at Glen Cove are also favorite past times.
You can enjoy the Garden of the Gods park year round, which is a wonderful red rock formation located to the north of Manitou Springs. Educational exhibits, maps & nature tours, 3 gift shops and a balcony restaurant overlooking the park is offered at the Visitor & Nature Center.
Located between Central Colorado Springs and Manitou Springs (which is quite laid-back), this area offers the best of both worlds. Its close proximity to Old Colorado City and downtown offers you culture and convenience. With only a short drive to the west, the mountains, Anasazi cliff dwellings, Miramont Castle and magical Garden of the Gods are there to provide an escape
There are some exceptional gated communities around the Kissing Camels Golf Club and, above and west of Garden of the Gods, is Cedar Heights, to name but a few. Nicols and Comito, well known builders of high priced homes, are developing a new high end sub-division on the hillside with large lots and views to inhale :)
Whatever the experience you are looking for, West Colorado Springs offers something for everyone.
